How To Get A Railroad Wheel Off An Axle
Union Pacific Railroad
in Pocatello, Idaho wondered the same thing. With a little help from their
maintenance department we designed a hydraulic system that would provide 300
tons of pulling force required to free from the axle a railroad wheel. Wheels
and axles were rolled down a track and positioned next to the wheel puller.
The hydraulic system then would extend out and behind the wheel, then down
to firmly grasp the back of the wheel. Then with a maximum pulling force of
300 tons would pull the wheel free from the axle. The wheel would remain on
the axle and rolled down the track to the next station for removal of the
wheel, and the next wheel assembly would roll in.
